About the Yonge Street

As the heart of Toronto, Downtown Yonge is the place to find some of the best business, shopping and entertainment opportunities in the world. Toronto takes its name from the Huron Indian word meaning “place of meeting” and with over 52 million people visiting every year, Downtown Yonge is definitely the place where people come together.

Downtown Yonge offers something tailored for everyone. Within the area, you will find several tourist destinations, over 600 retail stores, 150 bars and restaurants, 8 hotels, 4 theatres, and the outdoor entertainment hub of Yonge-Dundas Square.

Every November, Downtown Yonge welcomes the holiday season with décor that stretches across Yonge Street.  This includes 22 trees filled with LED light sticks and three 3-dimensional polar bears at the Yonge-College median; cross street displays hanging above Yonge Street from Queen to Grosvenor; and a spectacular 35 foot sculptural light tree at Yonge-Dundas Square sparkling with 52,000 blue and white LED lights.
